Peter Zumthor received his most formative training as an apprentice woodworker with his father. Zumthor received some formal architectural training from crafts school in Basel and at Pratt Institute. He first served as an architect on the local historic preservation commission, and late as a surveyor of housing developments, and then established his own practice in 1979 in the small village of Haldenstein.
